I was raised to believe that if you work hard and save, you’ll be fine.

So I did both. Then a restructuring took my biotech job in about three months. That’s when I learned: your paycheck is someone else’s decision.

It made me ask a harder question. What is my money actually doing while I wait?

How much buying power does cash lose to inflation?

Cash loses ground while it sits.

Plenty of careful people keep a large balance in savings while they research the next move. That's reasonable. It's worth knowing what the wait costs.

The BLS CPI annual average went from 258.8 in 2020 to 331.2 so far in 2026. That’s roughly 28%. $100 saved in 2020 buys about $78 worth of stuff today.

Hypothetical example. $10,000 over ten years, with 3% inflation:

  • Cash at 0%: about $7,400 in today’s buying power.

  • Invested at 10% a year: about $25,900, or $19,300 in today’s buying power.

Why 10%? The S&P 500 has averaged about 10% a year nominal, closer to 7% after inflation. But averages hide bad years. The 2000s were negative after inflation. A projection isn’t a promise.

Still, over long stretches, owned assets have tended to outpace inflation. Cash, by design, has not.

What income-producing assets do the wealthy own?

The wealthy don’t avoid cash. They just don’t ask it to do a job it can’t do. Instead, they own things that produce:

  • Businesses. Often the biggest one. A company they built, bought, or hold a stake in. Run well, it can pay its owner without him there every day. Run badly, it's a second job.

  • Stocks and index funds. Small slices of many businesses, plus dividends.

  • Real estate. Rentals, small multifamily, commercial buildings. Rents tend to adjust with inflation while a fixed-rate mortgage stays flat.

  • Lending. Private loans, notes, and bonds. They become the bank and collect the interest.

  • Royalties and intellectual property. Music, books, patents, licensing. Income from work done once.

  • Land. Farmland and timberland, which produce crops, lease income, or lumber.

Every one of these has trade-offs. Businesses take work. Stocks swing. Loans can default. My Memphis rental taught me that passive doesn’t always mean hands-off.

Each one produces income. Before you buy, ask how many of your hours it will still take.

What should you measure instead of net worth?

Most of us use our paycheck to fund our lifestyle. Whatever’s left goes into investments.

The wealthy flip it. The paycheck buys assets. The assets produce cash flow. The cash flow funds the lifestyle.

That changes what you measure. Not “How big is my net worth?” but “How much of my monthly life do my assets already pay for?”

That second number buys time. Time for soccer practice. Time to take a career risk. Time to say no.

Where does Amplifica Wealth fit?

This is why my co-founder Miguel and I started Amplifica Wealth.

Most advice starts with your budget. We’re not against a good budget. But you can only cut so far, and cutting doesn’t build ownership.

We focus on the other side: amplifying your investing capacity so your paycheck buys more income-producing assets, sooner. Our approach uses credit strategically and measures progress in monthly cash flow, not net worth. That comes with real risks, and we teach them alongside the math.

We run the method we teach. We’re not job-optional yet, and we share our real numbers as we go.

If that sounds like your kind of conversation, see how it works at AmplificaWealth.com.

How many months would your assets cover?

If your paycheck stopped next month, how many months would your assets pay for?

Not your savings. Your assets.
